Before we move forward let's go over the exit tickets that were previously submitted...
In your notebook jot down 2 take-a-ways from the previous lesson.
In the Apply portion of unit 1 we are going to spend our time working collaboratively and showing what we've learned.
So, let's get started.
Unit 1.3- Apply: Parts of Speech Learning Objectives:
I can work collaboratively
I can make connections to the 8 parts of speech
I can move through the 5 steps of the writing process
I can write a "How to Guide"
I can assess someone using a rubric
Do Now: What does it mean to work collaboratively?
Step 12: Before we begin applying what we've learned. We've got to take some notes... Take out your notebooks and lets learn about the 5 steps of the Writing Process.
Step 13: Time to put these notes in action!!!! Review the assignment directions and rubric below!
Step 15: As you can see for this assignment, you are going to create a How To Guide which will be used to teach someone else the basics of the 8 parts of speech. Your tasks is to complete steps 1 and 2 of the Writing Process. (brainstorming and prewriting)
The brainstorming will be done in class and the prewriting will be done outside of class.
Step 16:
Do Now #2- Name and provide details about 2 of the 5 steps of the writing process.
Now it is time to begin working on the 3rd step of the writing process... Drafting
We will spend the next couple of days walking through drafting our How to Guides. Please have your draft ready for review by the date given to you in class.
Step 17: This is probably the most important part of writing in this class. Peer editing. This is where I depend on you to be supportive of each other to ensure that we build a learning environment that allows us to work together. Watch this short video on the 3 basic steps of peer editing. And NO, we are not doing the assignment at the end :-)
Step 18: Okay now that we've watched a video on the basics of peer editing. What do we do?
First, Find someone in the class who you are okay with reviewing your draft. Then, Using the peer editing guide below work through each other's How to Guides to make sure that the draft is as clear and correct as possible.
Lastly, Find another partner and repeat steps 1 & 2
Step 18b: Once your writing has been reviewed by at least 2 peers review your own writing using the rubric...
Are you happy with what you gave yourself?
If not, what do you need to change?
What things have you done well?
Where do you need my help?
Please have these answers ready for your first writing conference. (This will take place in class)
Step 19: We are so close I can taste it!!!
The next step in the writing process is publication. During this step you are to do the following:
Type your work and make sure that you've followed the guidelines.
I know that this is your first unit and that you are probably unsure of what it is that I am looking for and guess what... That's okay!
Each person in this class will be required to stand up and present their How to Guide. In this mini presentation please share:
Your name
Your title
Your steps
Why do you think that your guide would help someone to learn the 8 parts of speech
Once your presentation is complete please turn in all evidence of your process through the 5 steps of the writing and congratulate yourself on a job well done!
