Why a blended learning course? In order to assist you in your journey to become a successful student, I have chosen to teach this class in a blended manner. A blended course is a course in which some learning is done face to face (in class) and some of the learning is done outside of class. (through our course website). I know that for many of you, life gets in the way of you getting to school every day and because of this I have set up a site to help you keep up. Of course, I would prefer for you to be in class every day however, I know that for some of you this isn't possible. This site is here to support you.
This course website will also serve as your at home support. Missed something while in class? Didn't understand something that we covered? Use the course site to help you. In connection with student centered learning, this course website allows you to be at the center and in control of your learning. You may work ahead if you finish a unit, and if you need a little extra time on a particular unit, you've got it here. Think of this site as your classroom away from the classroom.
Types of Assessments Throughout the school year we will have various types of assessments. Students will be required to post to a discussion forum and communicate with their classmates. Students will complete quizzes and tests at the discretion of the teacher. In addition, students will complete a writing assignment at the end of each unit. The largest assignment that students will have this year is their 9th grade portfolio. This portfolio will follow them to their senior year and it will serve as a component to their district required senior defense.
A word about Academic Integrity It is expected that all students will produce work that is original and a product of their learning. If and when you use a source you must site it correctly using the MLA citation guidelines. Need to cite something? Look here...
